Virtually all SYSA boys travel teams play in the Ohio Amateur Soccer League (OASL) in the Spring and Fall (the one exception is the Delaney/Dell team which plays in the AASL). This is a local North-East Ohio travel league including teams from cities such as Mentor, Cleveland Heights, and Bedford with driving times of maximally 30 minutes. The Fall and Spring season each have 8 games (4 home and 4 away). The game formats are either 6v6 (for U8-U10), 8v8 (for U11-U12), or 11v11 (for U13-U14) depending on the age group. Each team will have two weekly 90 minute practices and one game, usually on a Sunday. There are additional footskills and goalie training opportunities for players interested in further developing their soccer skills (check home page). Cost for playing both Fall and Spring seasons is $250 (scholarships are available). SYSA is a mostly volunteer run organization so parents are asked to volunteer or pay a $50 fee in lieu of volunteering.
The indoor winter season is comprised of two indoor sessions each 8 games and are played at the Multiplex, a 10 minute drive from Shaker Heights. Each team will also have one 60 minute indoor team practice and there are also additional sessions available involving striker/finishing, footskills, and goalie training. The first session is usually from November till mid-January and the second session from mid-January till March. The cost for each indoor session is $190 per season. Registration - Travel players pay a deposit in June prior to Session 1. Teams are reserved for Fall travel players. If spots become available, there will be a mini-tryout during the first Thursday practice of Session 1.
SYSA has travel teams for players from 7-14 years old in age appropriate teams ranging from U8-U14 (i.e. 'under 8' till 'under 14'). The age boundary is Aug 1 for each particular age group. If you are not sure, please use this online Soccer Age group calculator to figure out the Uxx age group your child belongs to this season. Occasionally, a player is put on a one-year older team (i.e. playing up), depending on talent and numbers of available other players.
