  • SYSA Overview

SYSA is geared towards providing different levels of soccer play and development depending on the age and skill level of the youth player (click links on the left for more info):

Mini-Kickers: is for 4.5-5 year olds (pre-K and K) and is geared towards developing soccer skills involving fun activities with the ball. This program is run in a joint fashion with the City of Shaker Heights via its Rec program.

K-1 program: is for children in grades K-1 and is a mix of soccer drills/games and small-sided games. This program is run in a joint fashion with the City of Shaker Heights via its Rec program.

Challenge grade 2-6: provides a starting level of competition for children in grades 2-6 via an in-town league and weekly practices. Games are played on Saturday afternoon. There are opportunities for additional weekly footskill sessions.

Shaker Youth Soccer Association is very proud of the above Challenge programs and our long history of involvement with the community. All SYSA Challenge programs are conducted by Nationally Licensed, professional coaches ensuring each player will benefit from a progressive learning program. There are no tryouts for Challenge programs and all practice sessions and games are held locally, which means that your child will spend more time playing soccer with their friends and classmates in a safe and comfortable environment.

Travel: provides an intermediate level of competition for children ages 7-14 via weekly games played in a travel league against teams from nearby cities. Players will have 2 weekly 90 min practices and one weekly game usually played on Sunday. The travel players will have additional weekly opportunities for footskill, finishing, and goalie training. There are two outdoor seasons, Fall and Spring, and most players also choose to play indoor in the two winter indoor sessions.

Premier: provides the highest level of play for talented youth players ages 9-14 from Shaker Heights and nearby cities. SYSA's Premier Football Club (PFC) teams play in the OYSAN State League and travel to other cities to play against other top premier clubs in North-East Ohio. The PFC teams also have the possibility of playing in the OYSAN State Cup and other tournaments such as the Bothwell Cup. PFC requires that the players continue to play with their respective travel team and provides therefore only one additional weekday 90 min practice and one additional game (mostly on Saturdays). PFC premier players will have additional weekly opportunities for footskill, finishing, and goalie training. PFC coaches have usually an A-, B-, or National Youth coaching license.
